How Long Should a T Shirt Be? A Guide to the Right Length
A T shirt can fit well through the chest and shoulders yet still feel wrong because of one quiet measurement: length. Too short, and the hem lifts every time you move. Too long, and the body looks heavier while the trousers disappear beneath it.
So how long should a T shirt be? For a regular untucked fit, the hem will usually sit around the middle of the fly, covering the waistband without extending far down the thigh. That is a starting point, not a universal rule. Your height, torso length, trouser rise and the intended silhouette all change the answer.
Where should a regular T shirt end?
Stand naturally with your arms by your sides. A regular T shirt should cover the waistband and reach roughly to the middle of the trouser fly. From the back, it should cover the belt line without falling far below the seat.
The shirt also needs enough length for movement. Raise both arms as if reaching for a shelf. A small glimpse of the waistband is normal, but the entire stomach should not become exposed. Sit down and check that the hem does not climb and stay gathered above the waist.
These checks matter more than a rigid number because two people of the same height can have very different torso proportions.
How long should an oversized T shirt be?
An oversized T shirt is intentionally longer, but length should work with width. A wider chest and dropped shoulder need a little more body length to maintain balance. If the shirt is very wide and unusually short, it becomes boxy rather than oversized. If it is both extremely wide and long, the result can overwhelm the body.
A useful oversized hem often finishes around the lower part of the fly or just below it. The exact point depends on whether you want a relaxed everyday silhouette or a stronger streetwear proportion. The back may sit slightly longer, but it should not look like a separate tunic unless that is the design.
Our guide to relaxed fit versus oversized fit explains how shoulder, width and length create two different silhouettes.
What about a boxy T shirt?
A boxy T shirt is often shorter and wider. The hem may finish near the waistband or at the top of the fly, especially with high rise trousers. This shorter line makes the legs appear longer and gives wide trousers space to begin cleanly.
Short does not have to mean cropped. The shirt should still cover the waistband during normal movement unless it is designed as a crop top. If a boxy tee feels too abrupt, pair it with a higher trouser rise rather than sizing up and changing the shoulder fit.

How trouser rise changes the ideal length
T shirt length cannot be judged without the trousers. High rise trousers meet the shirt sooner and work naturally with shorter or boxier hems. Mid rise trousers suit most regular and relaxed lengths. Low rise trousers require more coverage if you want the waist to remain hidden.
Try the shirt with the type of trousers you actually wear. A hem that looks perfect with high rise tailoring may expose too much with low rise denim. The right wardrobe relationship matters more than judging each piece alone.
How to measure T shirt length
Place a T shirt that fits you well on a flat surface. Smooth it gently without stretching. Measure from the highest point of the shoulder, close to where the collar begins, straight down to the bottom hem. This is commonly called body length.
Do not measure from the centre of the neckline because different collar depths will change the result. Record the measurement and compare it with the product size chart. A difference of two centimetres can be noticeable when the hem sits near the waistband.

Signs a T shirt is too long
- The hem reaches well below the fly on a regular fit.
- The shirt covers most of the back pockets.
- Fabric gathers heavily around the hips.
- Your trousers and leg line almost disappear.
- A jacket ends far above the T shirt with no clear styling intention.
A long shirt can still work as part of a deliberate layered outfit. The issue is not the measurement by itself. It is whether the extra length supports the silhouette or simply looks like the wrong size.
Signs a T shirt is too short
- The waistband shows while you stand normally.
- The hem lifts above the stomach during ordinary reaching.
- The shirt rides upward and stays caught at the waist.
- The body feels tight vertically even when the chest fits.
- The back hem does not cover the belt line.
If the shoulders and chest fit but the body is short, sizing up may create too much width. Look for a longer cut or compare garment measurements before buying.
Should you tuck in a long T shirt?
A tuck can manage extra length, but it should not be used to hide a poor fit every day. A full tuck works with tailored trousers and a substantial cotton tee that holds a clean surface. A small front tuck can define the waist while leaving the sides relaxed.
Very long fabric may bunch inside the trousers, especially with a close waistband. In that case, choose a shorter shirt for tucked outfits. Heavyweight cotton tends to create a more deliberate tuck than very thin jersey, though it needs enough room at the waist.
How should T shirt length work under a jacket?
When layering, the T shirt can finish just above, level with, or slightly below the jacket hem. Each creates a different effect. Keeping both hems close feels clean. Letting one or two centimetres of the T shirt show adds depth. A large difference looks intentional only when the whole outfit supports it.
A cropped jacket over a long oversized T shirt creates strong contrast and can shorten the appearance of the legs. A longer coat is easier because it contains the layers. Our guide to layering without looking bulky covers hem relationships in more detail.
Does cotton shrink in length?
Cotton garments can become shorter after washing, especially when exposed to high heat or strong mechanical action. Always assess a T shirt using its care instructions and allow for normal fabric behaviour. Prewashed or preshrunk does not mean that no further change is possible.
Wash cool when the label permits, reshape the hem before drying, and avoid excessive dryer heat. Read how to stop cotton T shirts from shrinking for a complete care routine.
A practical fitting routine
- Check that the shoulder shape matches the intended regular, relaxed or oversized fit.
- Confirm that the hem covers the waistband while standing.
- Raise your arms and sit down to test movement.
- Try the shirt with your usual trouser rise.
- Add the jacket or sweatshirt you plan to wear over it.
- Measure the body length and save the number for future shopping.
The TELLS view on length
The TELLS Signature Oversized T Shirt in White uses extra body space and a dropped shoulder to create a deliberate relaxed line. Treat the length as part of that complete silhouette. Pair it with straight or wider trousers and let the hem fall naturally, or use a restrained front tuck when you want more definition.
The best T shirt length is the one that lets you move without constant adjustment and gives the rest of the outfit a clear beginning. Use the fly as a guide, then let your proportions and clothes make the final decision. Explore more fitting advice in TELLS Guides.
