What to Wear to an Escape Room and Still Look Good After

Choose clothes that let you move, reach and focus, then keep the outfit polished enough for dinner or drinks afterward. A practical guide to shoes, layers and accessories.

For an escape room, wear comfortable shoes, trousers or another bottom you can move in, and a breathable top with a removable layer. You do not need a costume or gym clothes. You need an outfit that will not distract you if the room asks you to stand, crouch, reach, or move between clues.

The best outfit also fits the rest of the evening. A puzzle session may lead straight to dinner, a date, or a birthday gathering. That is where a simple, considered base is more useful than dressing only for the game.

Check the venue before choosing shoes

Escape rooms vary. Some are mostly puzzles at a table, while others involve more movement or a themed setting. Read the booking page for footwear rules, accessibility notes, or a request to leave bags outside. If anything is unclear, ask the venue. Operators including Escape The Room and Infinity Escape recommend practical, comfortable clothes and note that the experience can differ by room.

Clean sneakers or stable flat shoes are an easy default. Choose a pair you can stand in comfortably, rather than one that looks good only when you are sitting down. Avoid footwear that slips off or needs your attention every few steps.

Build the outfit from the bottom up

Trousers with enough room through the hip and knee make it easier to bend without readjusting. Relaxed denim, straight trousers, or comfortable chinos all work if the fabric moves with you. A long hem that catches under your shoe is less helpful, especially in a dim room. If you prefer a skirt or dress, check that you can crouch and reach comfortably in it.

A plain or quietly detailed T shirt keeps the upper half simple. Add an overshirt, cardigan, or light zip layer that you can remove if the room warms up. Our guide to layering without bulk is useful when you want a practical second layer that still looks composed.

If you want a ready example, the TELLS Real Flex Boxy T Shirt in Black has a relaxed shape and a clean front, so it can sit under a light overshirt without making the outfit busy. It is an option, not a requirement. Any top you already own that feels comfortable through the shoulders can do the job.

Keep accessories quiet

Leave oversized bags, long dangling jewellery, and anything you will need to guard while playing at home or in the venue's permitted storage area. Secure long hair if it falls into your face when you lean over a clue. Pockets are useful, but check the room's rules about phones and personal items before you enter.

This is not a warning that every escape room is physical. It is a way to remove small distractions. The less you need to fix your sleeves, shoes, or bag, the more attention you can give the experience.

Three outfit formulas for different plans

Casual afternoon

Wear relaxed jeans, a soft T shirt, clean sneakers, and a light shirt worn open. The layer gives you temperature control without changing the whole outfit.

Date or dinner afterward

Choose dark straight trousers, a neat knit or plain tee, and a soft jacket. Keep the shoes walkable. You can dress the look up with colour or texture rather than a restrictive fit. For a separate dinner setting, our birthday dinner guide

Coming directly from work

Keep the tailored trousers if they allow movement, then switch a formal shoe for a comfortable flat or sneaker if you can. A simple top beneath a blazer makes the change less noticeable. Our guide to tailored trousers with sneakers

What should you avoid?

Do not wear a new shoe for the first time, a delicate piece you will worry about brushing against props, or an outfit that only works while standing perfectly still. If the room has a special theme or activity requirement, the venue's guidance comes first. Otherwise, ease, mobility, and a clear silhouette are enough.
