What to Wear to the Berlin Marathon as a Spectator

For the Berlin Marathon, dress as a moving spectator rather than a stationary sports fan. Choose comfortable walking shoes, a breathable base and one light layer you can carry when the afternoon warms up. Keep your hands free for your phone and water. If you plan to meet a runner at several points, ease of movement matters more than a dramatic race day look.

Build the outfit around your route

Berlin spectators often move between viewing points using public transport and short walks. The marathon organiser's 2026 transport update names stations and line changes near the course, while its official app offers live runner tracking. Check the current route and transit information before leaving, then choose shoes you would trust for several hours on pavement.

If you will stay at one viewing point

Wear a cotton or other breathable shirt with straight trousers and a light overshirt. You may stand for longer than you expect, so cushioned closed shoes still earn their place. A compact layer is useful if you arrive early or find a shaded street.

If you will follow a runner across the city

Keep the same base but make it lighter and more mobile. A shirt that feels comfortable on a brisk walk, trousers with easy movement and a small crossbody bag work better than heavy outerwear or a large tote. The official media guide includes course information and passing times, but leave margin for crowds and changed connections.

What changes if the day is warm?

Start with the lightest outfit you can comfortably wear outdoors, then carry the layer. Do not assume that a September marathon means sweater weather all day. Sun exposure, walking pace and time spent standing in shade can make the same forecast feel different. If rain is possible, add a packable water resistant shell instead of a bulky coat. The point is adjustability, not more clothing.

A simple spectator formula

  • Breathable tee or shirt in a light or medium tone.
  • Relaxed trousers or jeans with enough room for a full day of walking.
  • Broken in sneakers with a secure fit.
  • Light overshirt or compact shell you can carry.
  • Small bag for phone, water and essentials.

A plain tee, such as the TELLS Signature Oversized T Shirt in White, can work as the base if the fit lets you move easily. It is an option, not a requirement.

What to avoid

New shoes are the clearest mistake. So are a heavy coat that becomes luggage by midday and a bag that swings when you need to move quickly. Avoid dressing for the runner's conditions. You are not racing, but you may still spend hours walking, waiting and changing plans.
