What to Wear Through Airport Security in the US
For airport security in the United States, choose a top you can wear on its own, trousers that stay secure without a belt, and an outer layer you can remove easily. Keep pocket contents organized in your bag. Comfortable everyday shoes are sensible, but routine shoe removal is no longer the standard TSA requirement.
This is a guide to dressing for the checkpoint, not a promise of faster screening. Clothing cannot guarantee that you will avoid an alarm or additional checks. Follow the officer and the instructions in your lane.
Do you still need to take your shoes off at TSA?
The nationwide policy changed on July 8, 2025. TSA announced that passengers at US airport checkpoints could keep their shoes on during screening. Some travelers can still be asked to remove footwear for additional screening. See the TSA announcement and AP reporting on the exceptions.
Choose shoes for the walking you will actually do. A familiar sneaker or loafer is usually a more practical styling choice than a pair that needs several straps adjusted. Easy removal remains useful if requested, but it is no longer the reason to build your entire US airport outfit around slip on shoes.
Build an outfit that still works when the jacket comes off
The base layer test
Before leaving, remove your jacket and look at the outfit underneath. Would you feel comfortable standing in a public queue in that top? A substantial tee, simple shirt or other top with the coverage you want makes the outer layer optional. Avoid relying on a coat to make an otherwise unfinished outfit wearable.
The trouser test
Walk, sit and lift your arms while wearing the trousers without a belt. If the waistband slips, choose a better fitting pair rather than discovering the problem at the checkpoint. An adjustable fabric waistband can be useful, but there is no need to dress in sportswear if you prefer ordinary trousers.
The outer layer test
Choose one layer that comes off without untangling a scarf, bag strap and several necklaces. An overshirt or simple jacket can keep a clean silhouette while remaining easy to handle. Have space to stow it after screening instead of carrying a loose bundle through the terminal.
Belts, jackets and TSA PreCheck
TSA PreCheck normally allows eligible travelers using its lane to keep belts and light jackets on, alongside shoes. The official enrollment page lists those benefits. Do not assume that this applies to every lane or that a heavy coat counts as a light jacket. Be prepared to remove an item when instructed.
For standard screening, plan around the possibility of removing your belt and outer layer. Choosing fewer accessories is a styling decision that makes your belongings easier to manage, not an exemption from screening.
A pocket plan before you reach the scanner
Louisville airport guidance emphasizes empty pockets before the scan and following security staff instructions. Its shoe removal wording reflects older general guidance, so use the newer TSA announcement above for the national shoe policy.
- Keep your identification accessible for the document check.
- When directed to prepare for screening, check every clothing pocket, including the small ones.
- Move loose belongings into a secure bag compartment or pouch as instructed. Do not leave your keys scattered across several garments.
- Follow the lane instructions about clothing and bag contents rather than copying the traveler ahead.
- After screening, step to the designated recomposure area before putting everything back.
Keep the checkpoint outfit and the flight outfit separate
The checkpoint outfit is about easy handling. The cabin outfit is about sitting, temperature and the length of your journey. You can add a warmer layer after security without wearing every layer through the queue.

These screening notes concern US TSA checkpoints. A return flight from another country can have different instructions. Check the departure airport guidance before each journey. Policy sources reviewed September 28, 2026.
